Their Afternoon High Tea platter was not available at the time we went, so we thought of trying out Sapphyr Lounge’s Western High Tea platter.

The platter comprises:

. Savouries

  • Smoked salmon and horseradish cream on brown bread
  • Farmed egg mayonnaise on white bread
  • English cucumber, cream cheese and rocket served on white bread
  • Chicken and mushroom vol-au-vent

. Sweets

  • Passion fruit meringue tart
  • Strawberry macaroons
  • Earl Grey chocolate truffles
  • Vanilla panna cotta and passion fruit jelly
  • Chocolate pave

. Scones – homemade vanilla scones with strawberry jam, cream cheese and lemon curd

. Tea or coffee

I would say my favourite of the savoury lot was the Chicken and mushroom vol-au-vent. Albeit small in size, it had plenty of flavour and, well, I do like a puff that doesn’t make a mess. The Smoked salmon bread, which is common to the Afternoon platter as well, was also good as usual.

Surprisingly, the Strawberry macaroon was the sweet treat I enjoyed the most. Not too sweet and with a very mild pang of tartness, it was soft on the inside with a beautiful composure that held it together on the outside. The Passion fruit meringue tart was nice too, particularly since the tart shell was not soggy and had a soft biscuit feel to it. But, as you can see from the images below, the Chocolate pave and Panna cotta took top spot in terms of visual appeal.

The scones were typically enjoyable, and I’ve always enjoyed the fact that they include lemon curd along with the usual cream and jam.

At the end of the day, the Afternoon platter is still my top preference at Sapphyr Lounge, and what I would like to go back for. It definitely feels more substantial in terms of taste and variety. However, the Western platter proved to be a decent alternative on this visit.

As I’ve mentioned earlier (https://theeatlog.com/2019/03/16/afternoon-high-tea-shangri-la-colombo/), the ambience of this place is fantastic – which is partly why, at the moment, it’s one of our favourite places to pop into for afternoon tea.
