The first thing I noticed was that Hilton’s L.A.B. (Lounge and Bar) had introduced a welcome drink to their high tea experience – something that was previously not included. This was a mildly chilled yet refreshing glass of tea with a bit of sugar syrup and a slice of lime. Nice touch. They offer a couple of varieties to choose from – the Traditional English platter and the Local Affair platter. The latter obviously veered towards local flavours and specialities that included cutlets, roti, godamba, pol sambol and seeni sambol items.

We went with the Traditional English platter which comprised:

. Sandwiches

  • Scottish smoked salmon, dill cream cheese and cucumber sandwich
  • Grilled chicken and watercress mini tortilla wrap
  • Brie and avocado on toasted brioche with strawberry marmalade
  • Slow roasted beef fillet, sweet gherkin and mustard butter laugen roll

I’d say their savoury platter is the tastiest, and has been consistently so. The roasted beef, sweet gherkin and mustard roll was pretty good too and I quite enjoyed trying it despite not being much of a beef eater. I was disappointed, however, not to find any chocolate items on the sweet platter. I’ve often relished the chocolate desserts and pralines (sometimes in combo with smooth hazelnut paste) at their buffet and think they do a quality job with them. So why they wouldn’t include it on their high tea stand is beyond me. Their scones are usually pretty decent and today was no different. We opted for tea, which seemed to have been liquored too strongly today. Perhaps it wasn’t the best tea they had to offer. Definitely not as good as on previous occasions, but luckily didn’t undo the rest of the enjoyable experience.

Yummy Rating: 4.0 / 5.0

    Hi Shehani
What brand of tea did they serve ? What was the tea ordered ? Was there a choice for you choose from ? A lot of hotels don’t focus on the tea just the food – but afternoon tea should be about the tea !!!!

      Hi Suren,
I believe they had brewed loose leaf tea, so there was no tag to identify the brand. And no, we weren’t offered a choice either.
True, the savouries and sweets are meant to be enjoyed over a good cup of tea – with the tea being the star of the experience.
To be fair, their tea hasn’t been bad on the many prior occasions that we’ve had their high tea. However, this time was a different story altogether!
