Have y’all seen the sweet stuff at Sapphyr Lounge? Those pastries look spectacular! Tucked away at the far end of the lobby, their pastry display is definitely worth taking a look at. And once you do, you’re bound to fall for something or another – just as I did, while waiting for my mooncakes to be packed (https://theeatlog.com/2019/09/07/mooncake-at-shangri-la-colombo/). It’s not that I have a massive sweet tooth, it’s just that they are so attractive and alluring. So much so that I’m a bit cross with myself right now for not taking a few decent pictures to do more justice to this post!

Although I have previously found their high tea platter to be quite impressive (https://theeatlog.com/2019/03/16/high-tea-shangri-la-colombo/), I clearly hadn’t paid enough attention to these pretty darlings. One of the two that we took away that day was their Chocolate Hazelnut Pavé (LKR 550). Soft, delicate and very pleasing, with an obvious tone of hazelnut coming through in the creamy filling between the sponge layers. I must say the home-made chocolate topping was quite wonderful too – rich, and not too milky or buttery.

However, it was their Almond Chocolate Biscuit Crunch (LKR 600) that blew me away. A divine entity is what it was. With a crunchy biscuit base, a mellow sponge topped with a rather tall but light layer of mousse-y chocolate cream, and the pastry’s walls lined with a milk chocolate and almond covering (a mouthful, yes) – what more could a lover of chocolate and almond possibly wish for? And it’s not just that it had elements that ticked all my boxes, it also tasted absolutely splendid! Oh, and did I mention the chocolate medallions on top? This treat was something special that I bonded with in an instant. All I wanted once I got started was MORE.

There were several more rather striking fellas in that display – in all forms of colour, shape and texture. Hats off to Sapphyr Lounge’s Pastry Chef! I honestly look forward to trying more of these delightful creations.
