The best thing about this resto-café is that it is open 24/7 – which is a rarity in Colombo. The little coffee shop on the ground level seemed like a lovely nook to enjoy a quick sweet treat and beverage. However, we were on the lookout for a spot of late dinner, and so were directed upstairs. The upper floor has a bit of a Greek island/Mediterranean theme going on, and is open to the elements, although roofed. Perhaps this factor contributed towards our general feeling that maybe Peppermint Café could up their game in the maintenance department.

From their beverage menu, we tried the Ice Caramel Latte (LKR 1,490), which was okay as a thirst quencher, but came across as a little diluted and did not have a great deal of coffee or caramel flavour. The fresh Narang Juice (LKR 790) gave the same vibe, where it felt a bit too dilute for the citrus flavour to come through sufficiently. Their Dalgona (LKR 990), however, was visually enticing, and had a pretty intense hit of coffee. Certainly, the best of the three beverages.

We tried two dishes off their food menu. The first was their Grilled Chicken Mexican Rice (LKR 1,890), which came with quite a sizeable serving of rice. Now, the lad who took our order did mention that it is a bit spicy (at which point I said to make it a little less spicy). However, we were not quite prepared for the level of heat in the dish – particularly with the chicken! It certainly packed a punch, and needed a bit of cooling off with the beverages. The chicken was not big on flavour itself, so most of the flavour for the dish came from the rice. With the amount of heat it had, we found it challenging to finish the whole dish.

The other dish we tried was the Mushroom & Caramelised Onion Kottu (LKR 3,090). This was pretty good in comparison to the former, and I quite enjoyed the caramelised onion in it. In fact, the relish was excellent. The kottu, too was good. Perhaps a little more mushroom would have made it a better-rounded dish, but it was enjoyable as it was – and filling, too. I did feel, though, that the accompanying sauce/dip – which was pretty spicy itself – and wasn’t a necessity for the dish.
