The Euro Diaries: Cream Cake in Bled

Kavarna Park claims to serve the most authentic, “original” Bled cream cake, and we were keen to try it. They have a spacious terrace that overlooks the gorgeous Lake Bled which, on the day, was glistening in the sunlight. We enjoyed our cream cake in the warmth of the late afternoon sun.

I feel like the image below does not do justice to the sheer size of the cake portion that Kavarna serves. It’s pretty huge, but so airy and soft, and absolutely delectable. As you can see, there are layers to it. At the bottom is a pillowy vanilla sponge, after which comes the light cream that gives the cake its identity – both equally tall layers, and atop is almost pastry-like layer of flaky biscuit which not only gives the cake some structure, but also a fair bit of texture. It was lovely. Not all that sweet, hence not too heavy on the calorie conscience either.

Bled Cream Cake

Bled Cream Cake reminded me a bit of the Papal Cream Cake that we tasted in Krakow a few years ago. This one, if my memory serves correctly, is a bit lighter than the former.

On a separate note, I happened to notice a wonderful display of delightful, colourful desserts as I passed by the counter inside the resto-café. If you do visit, don’t forget to have a peak (and perhaps even a peck) while you’re there.
