Vibrant artwork, charming antiques, and a welcoming ambience. That’s what greets you as you walk in through the gates of Luna Mews – tucked away within the unassuming salmon pink and olive-grey walls of the property. It’s a fantastic spot for a bit of lunch, brunch, or coffee, and sets the perfect tone for a long jaw with friends or family. The resto-café, with mostly al fresco seating, operates from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily, and serves dinner from Thursday through Saturday. The property also has boutique guest rooms on the upper floor.

We tried the Pineapple Lemonade (LKR 900) off Luna Mews’ beverage menu, and it was truly refreshing, with a good balance of pineapple, citrus and fizz to pep you up on a warm afternoon. While I’m not much of a matcha fan, their Mango Matcha (LKR 1,500) was quite enjoyable. The contrast between the vibrant mango purée at the base of the glass and the subtle matcha over it was eye-catching, and when stirred, turned into a rather pleasing balance on the palate.

From their mains, we tried the Pita Bowl (LKR 2,800), which was top-notch. Easily our favourite on the day. Presentation on point – as you can see, and very satisfying flavours and textures, too. We went with the prawn option (over chicken and tofu), and absolutely loved the prawn preparation. Perfectly seasoned, grilled to the bite, and drizzled with olive oil and seasoning. The hummus was wonderful. Smooth, but with a bit of textural character, and not too heavy on tahini or garlic – which was perfect, so as not to overwhelm with flavour, given the quantity on the dish. The beetroot relish, salsa, and pomegranate seeds added a lovely pop of colour and tastes to the dish.

Moa Moa (LKR 2,950) was an interesting combination of sushi rice, grilled chicken, salsa, guacamole, carrot relish, labneh, fresh lettuce, and pickled chilli and gherkin, with a sprinkle of seeds, and lavash sticks on the side. Like the prawns in the Pita Bowl, the chicken in the dish was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The dish was filling, and felt both fresh and satisfying at the same time, and almost felt like a trot around the globe with its unique blend of cuisines. If at all, a little more flavour in the rice would have elevated it further.

Finally, we tried a slice of Chocolate Cake from their display (split into two in the image below). While the sponge could have been a bit lighter in texture, the overall taste of it was great – particularly the ganache. Not too sweet, but sweet enough to satisfy.

All in all, Luna Mews turned out to be a delightful discovery, and we certainly look forward to our next visit.
