Wildish made a good first impression.

It was a Saturday night and the place (indoor and sheltered outdoor) was brimming with diners. However, they were well-equipped with a large brigade of capable and friendly staff to ensure that service was quick and efficient. Impressive.

The predominantly wooden interior creates an apt Wildish ambience, and the open view into the kitchen gives the place an extra bit of buzz. Individual portion sizes are generous with both food and beverages, and there are several sharing options available on the menu, too. It’s a great spot for families, as well as for an outing with friends.

The beverage menu had an interesting choice of signature mocktails, of which we tried their Ocean Sparkler – pineapple, ginger, blue Curacao, ginger beer and pineapple chunks (LKR 1,550), and Pinky Wild – strawberry, basil, lime, sparkling water (LKR 1,800). Both concoctions were as bright in taste as they were in appearance. Great thirst-quenchers to sip through the evening.

First up from the food menu, we tried Wildish’s Madu River Shrimp Salad (LKR 2,550). The marination on the grilled shrimp was beautiful, and the fresh mixed lettuce, avocado, gherkin, and cherry tomato halves were well complemented by a balsamic vinegar-based dressing and a sprinkle of parmesan. Overall, it had great freshness and flavour, with a touch of umami from the shrimp and cheese.

Wildish offers a Soup of the Day – which was cream of pumpkin on the day, and a Dish of the Month under their mains category. Unfortunately, this month’s tandoori butter chicken dish was already sold out for the day. Not that what we ordered disappointed in any way, but given how nice the dishes that we tried were, we would have loved to try this, too.

We tried their Wild Chicken Kabsa (LKR 2,750). The aromatic Arabic rice was generous in volume and tasted great, with a touch of spice and crunchy roasted cashew. It was neither oily, nor overwhelmed with spice. The chicken leg was cooked to tender perfection, and the shatta (Middle Eastern hot sauce) was a perfect accompaniment to the rice as well as the chicken. The mixed green salad provided a refreshing touch to the dish.

The Ceylon Coconut King Fish (LKR 3,200) came with two substantial slices of fish, again beautifully cooked, and with a vibrant, luscious, delicious curried coconut gravy. It went very well with the steamed rice. This, too, was topped with a bit of their signature fresh, well-dressed salad.

From their dessert menu, we tried the Caramelised Pineapple with Tres Leches Milk Cake (LKR 2,050), which came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. What I liked the most about it was that both the cake and milk weren’t too sweet – which can be the cake with tres leches at times. The sponge had a lovely, light texture, and the milk wasn’t too creamy or heavy – just right to balance the sweetness of the pineapple compote. And, optics? On point, with the prettiest of pink floral tuiles sitting atop the dessert like a fascinator.

We also tried the Moist Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream (LKR 2,050) – which was absolutely delectable. The cake itself had the taste and texture of a really good lava cake (without the lava, of course) with a fudgy base, and was impeccably complemented by the vanilla ice cream, a mildly viscous chocolate sauce, roasted cashew pieces, and a fabulous, crisp, almost toffee-like tuile. Had we been at home, we would definitely have licked our plates clean!

All-in-all, it was a great first experience – one that TEL recommends trying out. Looking forward to visiting again sometime.
