The Euro Diaries: Fish ‘n’ Chips in London

When one thinks of food in London, one thinks of fish ‘n’ chips. Well, at least I do. Pies, roasts, puddings and curries aside, it was the one thing I was looking forward to digging into. We had fish ‘n’ chips thrice during our stay, and the best of the three was the one we had at The Lamb Tavern at Leadenhall Market. First of all, Leadenhall Market is a visual treat. Dating back to 1321, the place is today a vibrant hang-out spot, tucked away – almost in plain sight – in the middle of the city, bustling with restaurants, pubs and a few shops of different sorts. I was truly glad that our guide Jim introduced us to this iconic market at the end of our city tour.

Back to the fish ‘n’ chips, what we appreciated with all of three that we sampled was that the batter wasn’t too thick or heavy. The fish was the star, and the batter was a crunchy contributor – which is not often the case when one orders fish ‘n’ chips at most restaurants around the world.

The Lamb Tavern’s menu described the dish as “cyder-battered haddock, triple-cooked chips, minted crushed peas, tartare sauce, curry sauce”. As you can see, it was a pretty sight. More than that, it was a scrumptious meal. A crisp batter that was not too thick, perfectly cooked fish, and chips that would make anyone happy. My favourite of the three dips was the minty pea paste. The fine balance of earthiness from the peas and cool freshness from the mint was perfect with the potato. And the fish didn’t really need much more than a squeeze of lemon, although the tartare did go very well with it. Overall, super stuff.

The Lamb Tavern also offers a sparkly array of cocktail and mocktail quenchers. So, if ever you do visit the restaurant/market, do give them a go.
